Benise Tempe Concert reviews
Morrissey lights up L.A.
I wouldn't say that this performance was at all disappointing, though I've seen Benise in better health and spirits at previous shows. You could tell he was still battling a throat problem as he skipped lyrics a few times or took a pause to drink water. In fact, it seemed that he pushed himself to continue, belting out each and every song, and I was pleased he didn't storm off stage or give up.
He was very chatty between songs and reached out to shake the hands of several of the brave souls crammed against the front row railing. "Ask" and "The Loop" seemed to get the most cheers from the cheap seats where I was at. Moz (as he is affectionately known among fans) did introduce himself as "George Lopez" halfway through the show, which got a huge laugh from the crowd.
Took his shirt off right after "First of the Gang," with only one shirt change. The ladies (me included) in my section gave a huge scream. Doll and the Kicks was a great opening band; my friend bought their album, a far cry from Kristeen Young. It seems Benise is picking better support for his shows.
The walk back to my car was soggy, the rain was miserable but I was still giddy from Benise. I guess that's a good indicator that he hasn't completely lost the charisma. There is no question I will come back for more! I hope the big guy still has steam in him, though he just turned 50. We shall see!
Until the next one...
